125th ANNIVERSARY PREPARATIONS ARE UNDERWAY Dr. Malcolm
Wynn is writing our history. FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION 1401 West New York Avenue, DeLand, FL 32720 386-734-0677
On March 3, 1883, a few Kentucky residents who had moved to DeLand organized themselves as a congregation then known simply as the Church of Christ. Eventually the name was changed to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). After meeting in homes, in 1885 the church was erected on a donated lot at West Voorhis and South Florida Avenues. In 1890, it was destroyed by fire. During their meetings in temporary quarters, the congregation decided to purchase a lot on the corner of Wisconsin Ave. and Woodland Blvd. The church remained in this location until 1977 when the congregation moved to a multi-purpose facility built on the corner of West New York Ave. and Temple Ave. Since then there have been two major additions to the original church made possible by the generous estates of McDowell’s and Henson’s.
In March, 2008, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will celebrate 125 years of serving the DeLand community.
Throughout 2008 there will be other commemorations of the faithfulness and dedication shown by Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) members during the 125 years of serving the greater DeLand community. |
